The fact that we are posting the photo proves we then managed to navigate the Tokyo rail system and then the unnamed streets and alleyways in order to make it to our hostel.

Those are some pretty significant achievements, so we’re rewarding ourselves with a shower and then bed! New adventures can wait for tomorrow!

  13. Quick question — when you arrived in Japan did passport control/customs ask to see proof of ongoing transportation out of Japan? Also what did you guys decide to do about that/where you headed to next? We called a ferry company last night to make a reservation for an overnight ferry from Japan to South Korea so that we could show that on arrival in Japan but unfortunately instead of an email confirmation they just gave us the reservation number.

We were actually not asked anything when we landed in Japan… like, not one single thing! HOWEVER, when we flew out of LAX on Malaysia Airlines, they did ask us about whether we had proof of onward travel. We have purchased plane tickets on Peach Airlines to Hong Kong, and we had this print out when we checked in. The girl did look at it, but in a very cursory way. I think if we hadn’t had the printout it would have been a problem, however, given that we had an answer and some kind of proof that we weren’t planning to stay in Japan longterm, that was enough.

So: I doubt you’d have any issue when you actually land in Japan, however, you should absolutely check with your airline and ask about using your ferry reservation as proof of onward travel. Some people have not been asked for it, but we were.

Good to know – thanks so much for getting back to me. We’re flying on China Airlines from JFK so who knows what their policies are. I am a little concerned since the ferry company only gave us a reservation number instead of sending us a confirmation email so guess I’ll have to try calling them again. Would really hate to not be able to fly out of the US because of the whole thing! That would be the worst way to start the trip!
