We’ve been awake for 28+ hours at this point, but consider this photo proof that after three flights (totaling about 15 hours) we made it to Japan! The fact that we are posting the photo proves we then managed to navigate the Tokyo rail system and then the unnamed streets and alleyways in order to make it to our hostel.
Those are some pretty significant achievements, so we’re rewarding ourselves with a shower and then bed! New adventures can wait for tomorrow!

In another life, I moved from Toronto, Canada to Nashville, TN to pursue my doctoral degree in Psychology. That chapter of my life is now finished, but I did earn the right to demand you call me Dr. Steph (though I respond just as well to plain old Steph). I am an avid reader whose book collection is rivaled only by my many pairs of cute shoes. I also like to knit, hold impromptu karaoke parties, and try new and unusual foods. Generally not all at the same time. I also really love to learn languages, which may explain why I took 3 years of Latin in highschool. I'm turning over a new leaf, so instead of looking forward, I'm going to work on enjoying the present, so the country I'm most looking forward to is whichever one we're in right now!
Woo hoo!!! Enjoy that rest…you’re going to need it! Congratulations on the start of your new life.
YEA!!! I JUST responded to your comment on my blog, saying I wasn’t sure if you were in the air or what. So glad you guys made it safely (& smiling!).
Get some rest, and congratulations. It’s a whole new world…
Awesome! Have an amazing time!! Get a lot of good rest, and then, head out and conquer it, baby!
Congratulations! Looking forward to seeing what you thought of one of my favourite countries.
Yay!! Can’t wait for you to wake up from your nap and show us around!!
Awesome and congratulations! I’ll be following your adventures with glee π
Hooray!! Can’t wait to see what you guys get up to π
Yippee! You certainly look happy to finally be there; this will be some well deserved rest!
Yeay! So Exciting!! Welcome to your new adventures – and high five for finding your way around the subway system with no sleep… that’s a challenge enough in an English speaking country π
Yee-haw!
Great work on making it to Japan and your hostel – can’t wait to see what adventures you two get up to. π
Just returned from Japan only a couple of months ago and already miss those sub way rail systems!!! Miss those friendly people of Japan…
Have a fantastic time there π
Quick question — when you arrived in Japan did passport control/customs ask to see proof of ongoing transportation out of Japan? Also what did you guys decide to do about that/where you headed to next? We called a ferry company last night to make a reservation for an overnight ferry from Japan to South Korea so that we could show that on arrival in Japan but unfortunately instead of an email confirmation they just gave us the reservation number.
We were actually not asked anything when we landed in Japan… like, not one single thing! HOWEVER, when we flew out of LAX on Malaysia Airlines, they did ask us about whether we had proof of onward travel. We have purchased plane tickets on Peach Airlines to Hong Kong, and we had this print out when we checked in. The girl did look at it, but in a very cursory way. I think if we hadn’t had the printout it would have been a problem, however, given that we had an answer and some kind of proof that we weren’t planning to stay in Japan longterm, that was enough.
So: I doubt you’d have any issue when you actually land in Japan, however, you should absolutely check with your airline and ask about using your ferry reservation as proof of onward travel. Some people have not been asked for it, but we were.
Good to know – thanks so much for getting back to me. We’re flying on China Airlines from JFK so who knows what their policies are. I am a little concerned since the ferry company only gave us a reservation number instead of sending us a confirmation email so guess I’ll have to try calling them again. Would really hate to not be able to fly out of the US because of the whole thing! That would be the worst way to start the trip!
